Several U.S. states accusing Meta of designing Facebook and Instagram in ways that intentionally foster addiction among minors are expected to demand nearly 200 billion dollars in damages. The trial begins on Tuesday in Oakland, near San Francisco.
According to statements reported by AFP, the states’ legal team is preparing to request around 193 billion dollars in compensation, although the final amount has not yet been officially confirmed.
Throughout the trial, which is expected to run until the end of September, attorneys general from California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey will attempt to prove before a federal jury that Meta violated multiple U.S. laws protecting children’s online safety and privacy.
The case stems from a 2023 lawsuit filed by a coalition of about 30 states, accusing Meta of implementing features in its apps that could be addictive for minors.
